AV Students Pitch in to Park Design

One of the groups most in need of public recreation opportunities in Anderson Valley is youth, so we wanted to make a special effort to include young people's voices in designing the park.

AV Service Learning Team students facilitated three student workshops at the Elementary and Jr/Sr High Schools in May and June:

1. 7th-9th grade: 13 students

2. 10th-12th grade: 8 students

3. 5th grade: 22 students

SLT leaders led students in brainstorming potential new park features, then voting on their favorites.

We additionally sent out an  online survey to all junior high and high school students, with 69 student respondents. 

Through the workshops and survey, a couple notable ideas came through loud and clear:

1) Students' top requests are for outdoor basketball and volleyball courts!

2) Kids want more public places to connect with peers, and more options of things to do! There's a ton of enthusiasm for park development.

Students suggested so many creative and helpful ideas. It’s clear that youth in Anderson Valley crave a space to connect and are excited for park and skatepark development.
